Reshuffling: how the app makes room

Reshuffling is what lets you rearrange a finished timetable without ever breaking it. When a change would clash with existing lessons — dropping a lesson where another already sits, sliding a break over a lesson, or changing a student's hours — Schedule My Lessons moves the other lessons around so everything still fits, then shows you exactly what it did before saving anything. Nothing is overwritten, and nothing is final until you confirm.

When reshuffling kicks in

Reshuffling happens automatically whenever a hands-on change collides with existing lessons:

Dropping a lesson onto an occupied time. As you long-press and drag a lesson, a time that's already taken by a moveable lesson turns orange. Drop there and the app moves the lesson(s) in the way to other times their students are free.
Moving or lengthening a break. A break is your own time, so it always wins. Any lessons it now overlaps are re-homed, and later lessons can slide earlier to fill the freed time.
Editing a student's availability. If you change someone's free times so their current lesson falls outside them, the app finds that lesson a new home that fits — instead of leaving it stranded.
Seating an unscheduled student. When a student can't be placed automatically they appear in an "unscheduled" banner. Tap Make room and the app reshuffles the timetable to fit them in.

Different triggers, same idea: make the change you asked for, and quietly tidy up around it.

The one rule it never breaks

Reshuffling never bumps an already-scheduled student out of the timetable to fit someone else. It only ever rearranges lessons into times their own students are genuinely free. If it can't make everything fit that way, it won't force a half-solution that drops somebody — it tells you, and nothing changes unless you choose to accept it.

That's the core promise of hands-on editing: nudge and rearrange as much as you like, and you'll never accidentally lose a lesson you'd already placed.

It moves as little as possible

When something has to give, the app looks for the smallest change that works:

1. First it tries to move only the one lesson in the way.

2. If that's not enough, it rearranges the rest of that day.

3. Only if it still can't fit does it attempt a fuller re-solve, keeping the lesson you dragged pinned where you dropped it.

Lessons that don't need to move, don't — so the timetable you know stays as stable as possible. Preferred (★) times are protected too: a lesson sitting in a starred slot is never quietly demoted to a non-preferred time.

You always see it first

Before anything is saved, a preview lists every lesson that will move, showing its old time and its new time side by side.

Confirm applies the whole set at once.
Cancel leaves everything exactly as it was.

If the reshuffle couldn't seat everyone, the preview says so and only lets you back out — you'll never end up with a worse schedule than you started with. And if you change your mind after confirming, Undo puts every moved lesson back in a single tap.

Good to know

Dropping a lesson on top of another never overwrites anything — the app reshuffles the lessons in the way into other times their students are free, shows a preview of every move, and only applies it when you confirm. If it can't fit everyone, your schedule is left untouched.
Reshuffling never leaves an already-placed student unscheduled; if a change can't be made without dropping someone, the app cancels it rather than force it, so you never end up worse off than before.
Reshuffling isn't something you buy on its own — it's the engine behind several editing tools. Drag-to-rearrange is a Pro feature, so the reshuffle it triggers needs Pro; the reshuffle when moving or editing a break, or using "Make room" for an unscheduled student, works on any plan.
One tap on Undo puts every moved lesson back where it was, all at once.
